Local SEO checklist for service businesses
A practical checklist to help plumbers, clinics, law firms, and other local businesses show up when nearby customers search.
When someone searches for a service "near me" or in their city, Google shows a map with a handful of businesses before any regular results. For local service businesses, appearing there is often worth more than any other marketing activity.
Use this checklist to find the gaps in your own local presence.
Google Business Profile
- Claim and verify your profile
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add relevant secondary categories
- Add your services, service areas, and accurate opening hours, including holiday hours
- Upload real photos of your team, premises, vehicles, and work, and keep adding new ones
- Write a clear business description that explains what you do and where
- Turn on messaging only if someone will reply promptly
- Post updates, offers, or news regularly
Name, address, and phone consistency
Your business name, address, and phone number should be written exactly the same way on your website, your Google profile, and major directories. Inconsistent details make it harder for Google to trust which information is correct.
Reviews
Reviews influence both rankings and whether people choose you.
- Ask every happy customer, ideally soon after the job is done
- Make it easy with a direct link to your review form
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically
- Never buy reviews or offer incentives that break platform rules
Your website
- Create a separate page for each main service, explaining what it involves, who it is for, and the areas you cover
- If you serve several towns, create genuinely useful location pages rather than copies with the town name swapped
- Show your address and phone number on every page, usually in the footer
- Add local business structured data so search engines can read your details
- Make sure the site loads quickly and works well on phones
Local links and mentions
Links from local sources tell Google you are a real, established business. Good options include local chambers of commerce, trade associations, suppliers, sponsorships, community events, and local news coverage.
Tracking what matters
Measure calls, direction requests, and website enquiries from your Google profile, not just rankings. Adding tracking parameters to your website link helps you see those visits in analytics.
How long does it take?
Profile improvements can show results within weeks. Reviews, content, and links build over months. Local SEO rewards consistency, so a steady monthly routine beats a one-off burst of activity.
